Two Fathers Unite to Care for Their Four Kids with Special Needs
These men know what, "it takes a village" really means.
At The Salvation Army in Colorado Springs, we believe in creating opportunities for families to rebuild and thrive. This past December, we had the privilege of assisting a unique and resilient family in their journey toward stability.
Two dedicated fathers, each with two children from the same mother, embarked on a life-changing move from the East Coast to Colorado, pursuing their dream of a fresh start. All four children have autism, and after their mother released her parental rights, the fathers took full responsibility for their well-being.
Through perseverance and community support, the family secured a housing voucher, an essential step in their transition. Our Family Housing Center (FHC) played a crucial role in obtaining three birth certificates, a necessary requirement to finalize the voucher process.
Case management worked closely with the family, ensuring the older two children were placed in schools that provided the accommodations they needed to succeed. With these key steps in place, the family spent 87 days in our shelter before finally moving into their new home—a place with a fenced-in yard and a backyard playset where the children can feel safe and happy.
This story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of a supportive community. At The Salvation Army, we are honored to be part of journeys like these, offering hope and stability to those in need. If you or someone you know requires assistance, we are here to help.
Together, we can make a difference—one family at a time.
