The Donut Day Story
In 1938, the first National Donut Day was celebrated in Chicago, and The Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies were officially immortalized. The Salvation Army “Donut Lassies” are credited with popularizing the donut in the United States by serving donuts on the front lines of WWI. When troops (commonly known as “doughboys”) came back from fighting in Europe they wanted donuts - and so the craze began!
Over a hundred years later, The Salvation Army still serves on the front lines helping veterans and their families.
