Honoring Our Heroes: How The Salvation Army Supports Veterans in Colorado Springs

Mar 27, 2025

“God loves with a great love the man whose heart is bursting with a passion for the impossible.”

— William Booth, Founder of The Salvation Army

Gary took a leap of faith by moving to Colorado to attend Charis Bible College. Unable to find housing, he found solace and support through The Salvation Army VA GPD program. After facing the brink of homelessness, Gary found not only housing and support but also a new purpose—giving back as a Salvation Army volunteer. His journey reflects the power of community, compassion, and second chances.

For many veterans, returning to civilian life comes with unimaginable challenges—from securing stable housing and employment to navigating mental health struggles and healthcare access. At The Salvation Army in Colorado Springs, we believe that no hero should be left behind. Through our low-barrier sheltering, transitional housing program, and comprehensive case management, we provide the support our veterans need to regain independence and rebuild their lives.

“The Salvation Army is just phenomenal… They support us veterans like you wouldn’t believe. Everyone is so loving and caring and very encouraging… Without this place, I might have been on the street,” says Gary.

In gratitude of the assistance he received, Gary decided to give back, committing up to six hours each week assisting with the preparation of meals in our Colorado Café during his stay. Hew was recognized at our annual appreciation event for how generously he gave back to the community.

For veterans like Gary, The Salvation Army is more than just a place of refuge—it’s a second chance.
