From Domestic Abuse to a Message from God: How One Mom Found Safety in Salvation

Jan 28, 2025

At the Colorado Springs Salvation Army, we believe in the power of community and the unyielding spirit of hope. Over the past several months, we have been privileged to work with a mother and her young child, helping them escape the grip of domestic violence. This journey, filled with hardship and uncertainty, has been a true testament to the strength of our community and the love that binds us all together.

From county and state officials to our dedicated Family Services and Red Shield staff and numerous volunteers, we witnessed a profound outpouring of support. Neighbors, children, and fellow families in our programs came together to offer their time, resources, and compassion, creating a safety net that ensured the well-being of this family. At 908 Yuma Street, where our doors are always open, we witnessed firsthand the incredible bond of care that transcends borders—neighbors opened their homes to provide shelter, comfort, and stability during a time of crisis.

Through the relentless support of the Colorado Springs community, this mother and her young child found a place of peace and safety. Today, they are living in a loving environment with a close relative, away from the violence that once threatened to overshadow their future. This relative, who welcomed this mother and child into their home and referred to them as a “message from God” — a divine reminder to embrace a more communal life after years of seclusion following the loss of her son. This is a powerful reminder that God’s will moves in mysterious and beautiful ways.

For all of us at the Red Shield After School Program, there is no greater joy than seeing a child smile and laugh. This story is a testament to the resilience of children and families in the face of adversity and the transformative power of community support. We are proud to continue safeguarding, nurturing, and guiding all those who seek refuge, love, and hope.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Together, we have shown this family that they are not alone, and that there is always hope on the horizon. At the Colorado Springs Salvation Army, we are committed to continuing this mission of love, care, and community support, ensuring that every child and family who comes through our doors knows they are valued, cherished, and never forgotten.
