From Abuse to A Life: One Mother's Journey to Protect Her Family

Feb 3, 2025

Her ex tested the security of the shelter and found out how The Salvation Army protects domestic violence victims.

At The Salvation Army, we believe in providing more than just shelter—we offer a place of hope, support, and transformation. Today, we celebrate a milestone in one family’s journey as they move into their own home, ready to embrace a brighter future.

A courageous single mother and her daughter arrived at our Family Housing Center (FHC) seeking refuge from domestic violence. Determined to rebuild her life, she faced many challenges, including encounters with her abuser outside the shelter. However, with the unwavering support of our staff, law enforcement, and DHS, we ensured her safety and provided the resources necessary for her to regain stability.

During her stay, she worked closely with her case manager to secure Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), which not only provided a source of income but also helped cover her security deposit and first month’s rent. She successfully completed court-mandated classes, resolving legal matters, and took a significant step forward by securing employment. Committed to her long-term success, she also enrolled in school this January, receiving financial assistance that helped her transition from shelter life to permanent housing.

Recognizing her dedication and resilience, the FHC management team granted her a brief extension beyond the standard 90-day stay, allowing her to complete her plans with weekly progress updates. She honored her commitment, needing just two extra weeks before securing a permanent home. Today, she is not only housed but also pursuing a career in nursing, building upon her medical certifications and striving for a stable future for her daughter.

Reflecting on her journey, she shared:

“This shelter has been an incredible source of stability and support for me and my daughter during this challenging time, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work toward a better future while staying here. I have been actively taking steps to improve my situation and secure stable housing and employment. This shelter has been a safe and supportive place for me and my daughter, and I cannot express enough how much it means to us. An extension provided me with the additional time needed to solidify my plans and transition into a more stable and independent living situation. I am deeply committed to continuing my progress, and I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to stay here as I work toward these goals.”

Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, the impact of community support, and the importance of organizations like The Salvation Army in helping families overcome adversity. We are honored to have been part of her journey and look forward to seeing her thrive in her new home and future career.
