Bringing Hope to Families in Colorado Springs

Mar 27, 2025

“You cannot warm the hearts of people with God’s love if they have an empty stomach and cold feet.”

— William Booth, Founder of The Salvation Army

Every day, families in El Paso County struggle to make ends meet. Whether facing food insecurity, high utility bills, or the challenge of providing for their children, many turn to The Salvation Army Family Services for help. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we extend hope, stability, and the love of Jesus to those who need it most.

Through these efforts, we don’t just meet basic needs—we offer families a sense of security, dignity, and God’s unwavering love. For children like Sarah, The Salvation Army is more than just a place for help—it’s a place of friendship, faith, and fun.

“I like to come to The Salvation Army because I get to hang out with friends and play and learn about the Bible. They also have good food and go on tons of fun field trips,” said Sarah.

When Sarah’s mom embraced the responsibility of raising her niece and nephews alongside her own child, the financial strain on this single mom became apparent. The Salvation Army stepped in to provide affordable after school care and summer day camp as well as essential assistance, ensuring the family had access to food, holiday meals, gifts, and new school clothing.

By providing a safe and welcoming space, we help children grow in faith and confidence while ensuring their basic needs are met. Every child deserves to start the school year with confidence. Through our annual Back-to-School Shopping Spree, 230 children from working poor families, including the Murphy family, received $100 worth of new school clothing from JCPenney. A simple gift of new clothes can mean the world to a child eager to fit in and focus on learning.

With 2,146 children among those we served last year, our mission is clear: no family should have to choose between food, warmth, and hope. Together, we can fill empty stomachs, warm cold feet, and bring the light of hope to families in need.

We're a Helping Hand for Families in Need! Last year, 1 in every 30 people in El Paso County received assistance through our programs including:

  • Food Pantry – 600 bags of groceries delivered weekly.
  • COPE Utility Assistance – Keeping homes warm and safe.
  • Colorado Café Meals – 300,000 meals and snacks served.
  • Seasonal Assistance – Hundreds of meals during Thanksgiving and Christmas and a back-to-school shopping spree for over 230 kids.
  • Family Hope Center shelter housed 434 families.
