A Parents Worst Nightmare: How One Family Found Hope in Heartache

Jan 28, 2025

No parent should ever have to outlive their child.

This month, we’re reflecting on an incredible story of perseverance and hope—a testament to the impact of community and compassion in the face of unimaginable hardship.

A two-parent family with two young children arrived at our Salvation Army shelter in Colorado Springs after experiencing a devastating loss. The family had recently spent their savings to cremate their twin babies, whom the mother had carried almost to term. Shortly after, they faced eviction and found themselves in desperate need of a fresh start.

Determined to rebuild their lives, they made the decision to move to Colorado Springs. The father quickly secured a job as a manager at Taco Bell, bringing a sense of stability to the family. However, the mother faced a unique challenge. Without an ID—and with the added complication of a name change—she struggled to secure employment. Despite this, she remained steadfast, working tirelessly to navigate the often-complex processes of obtaining identification. Guided by our case manager, she connected with multiple agencies and never gave up.

Her perseverance paid off. In the meantime, she found an employer who believed in her potential and was willing to hold a position for her until she could present her ID. This small but powerful act of kindness became a turning point in their journey.

After 95 days in our shelter, the family’s hard work and determination culminated in a new beginning. Both parents were employed, the mother had successfully obtained her ID, and the family moved into their own three-bedroom apartment. Their story is a testament to resilience, the power of a supportive community, and the resources that organizations like The Salvation Army provide.

At The Salvation Army in Colorado Springs, we are honored to play a role in stories like this. Our mission is to provide not just shelter but also hope, guidance, and tangible support to help families achieve lasting stability. This family’s journey reminds us why we do what we do—and it’s all made possible thanks to the generosity of our community.

To those who donate, volunteer, or advocate on behalf of our work, thank you for being part of these life-changing moments. Together, we’re building brighter futures for families in need.
